What is a flexi hose?

Flexi hoses, also known as flexible hoses, are the braided connectors that carry water to your sinks, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. They are convenient and easy to install, but when one bursts it can release litres and litres of water in a short time and cause serious damage to your home and belongings. Did you know that over 20 percent of home insurance water damage claims are caused by these hoses?

How long do they last?

A stainless steel braided hose typically lasts about 5 years before you start to see signs of wear, and some last 5 to 10 years. Once the braiding is damaged they can pop like a balloon. For peace of mind we recommend checking your flexible hoses every year.

Where to find them

Under your bathroom, kitchen and laundry sinks, connected to dishwashers and washing machines, behind some toilets, and on any appliance that needs a water supply.

Top tips to avoid a burst

Inspect and replace worn hoses regularly. Look for cracks, rust spots, corrosion or bulges and replace immediately if you see any. Use good quality hoses, not the cheapest ones. Make sure they are installed without twists or kinks. And if you are going away for a while, turn off the main water supply. In a unit, find your isolation taps early, often under the kitchen bench or laundry tub, or in a hallway cupboard in newer units, so you can shut the water off fast if something goes wrong.
